KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Police in Tennessee say officers who responded to a domestic situation fatally shot a man Saturday after he shot a woman in the face. The woman is expected to survive.
According to the Knoxville Police Department, two officers responded to reports of a domestic situation involving an armed man at a home on Saturday morning.
Seconds after they came inside, the officers encountered a man with a handgun who then shot a woman in the home, and police fired back at the man, hitting him at least once, the department said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the face that is not considered life-threatening.
The department says the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading an investigation of the shooting under standard protocol. The officers are on routine administrative leave and police will conduct an internal investigation.
